The joint mission of the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) says Syria has succeeded in removing or destroying over 92 percent of its total chemical weapons stockpile.
Sigrid Kaag, the head of the mission overseeing the destruction of Syria’s arsenal, said on Sunday in the Syrian capital city of Damascus that 7.5-8.0 percent of the chemical weapons material has remained inside the country at “one particular site.”
“However, 92.5 percent of chemical weapons material [being] removed or destroyed is significant progress,” she added.
Kaag further said that 6.5 percent of the remaining chemical material would be shipped out of Syria while a small percentage would be destroyed in the Arab country.
